Sony’s 8-Megapixel camera for iphone 5

Sony's 8-Megapixel camera for iphone 5

In an on-stage interview at Carnegie Hall with Walt Mossberg, Sony CEO Howard Stringer confirmed an earlier rumor that Apple's upcoming Smartphone, iPhone 5 will sport 8MP digital camera with an image sensor by Sony.

Stringer laughingly said about the irony of supplying sensors to Apple which is one of his largest competitors in market:

"It always puzzles me, Why would I make Apple the best camera?"

With this , Stringer also informed that the the camera sensor plant in Sendai was affected due to the natural disaster in Japan which lead to the delay of shipments of sensors to Apple. This could be one of the reasons for the delay in release of Apple's iphone 5.

Previous generations of Apple iPhones lacked in providing better quality of cameras, so this time for iphone 5, Apple is focusing on to remove this drawback. OmniVision, who was the regular supplier of image sensors to Apple might not be able to make 8MP camera sensors for large enough volumes this time, so Apple has decided to move on to Sony. Sony has a pretty good record in terms of phone cameras and it also makes  8MP image sensors for Smartphones such as Sony Ericsson Xperia NEO. The new Exmor R, sensor used in Xperia Arc features improved technology for low light situations which will be used by Apple for its new Smartphone, iphone 5.
